Description

 To be a member of a team working on the exploitation of two User Support and Operations Centres (one USOC in Brussels; one in Noordwijk, the Netherlands) which are control centres from where scientific instruments on-board the International Space Station (ISS) are managed and controlled, and science data received and processed.

The primary assignment includes the preparation of the operations surrounding scientific experiment execution on-board the Space Station: developing and documenting operations concepts, operations procedures for ground and crew, synoptic displays, and various related operations products. This work will include work on the Engineering Model and other ground models of the involved payloads.

During the execution of the scientific experiments, the team will staff the control centre, and be in charge of the relevant payload operations as part of the European ground operations network. The staffing of the control centres is organized in shifts.

All the work is done in close collaboration with various operations and science teams throughout Europe, with regular travelling. The team members will attend training, familiarisation courses and workshops related to the USOC systems and the ISS facilities and subsystems. Operations simulations are also regularly organized to train the Operators for their tasks, to maintain Operator proficiency, and to enhance teamwork skills.

Requirements

 The candidates should hold a degree in a relevant discipline: engineering, sciences, etc. Some previous working experience is considered an advantage, but is not mandatory. Candidates should be prepared to work in shifts. The following experience and qualifications are relevant for the position:

  • stress-resistant and problem-solving attitude;
  • excellent communications skills in English (spoken, written);
  • experience with operations and/or operations engineering;
  • familiar with Linux platforms, networks and computers in general;
  • experience in documentation and/or procedure writing in English.

Additional Information

 The work will be performed at our offices in Zaventem (Brussels) and at the USOCs (Brussels and/or Noordwijk) with regular additional international travel (typically the Netherlands and Germany) for training, meetings, etc. Excellent spoken and written English is required
